Description
The Fisherman's Trail winds along the banks of the Stura di Demonte River and the irrigation canals that crisscross the Fossano plain, connecting wetlands, riparian forests, and agricultural areas in a route over forty kilometers dedicated to discovering the river ecosystem of the province of Cuneo. The trail takes its name from the tradition of sport fishing that has characterized these waters for generations, frequented by brown trout and grayling. Fossano, dominated by the imposing castle of the Princes of Acaja, built in 1324 with its four corner towers, is the ideal starting point for this long, flat itinerary. Along the way, you pass through wetlands where herons and egrets nest, and you walk alongside the canals of the medieval irrigation system that still feeds the rice fields and orchards in the area. This long route, but without technical difficulties, is recommended to split it over two days, bringing plenty of water.
