Description
The Sentiero delle Grandi Vigne (Great Vineyards Trail) traverses the heart of the Langhe del Barolo region in the La Morra area, one of the five municipalities where the famous Piedmontese red wine is produced from Nebbiolo grapes. The trail winds for forty kilometers through vineyards recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2014, connecting the main wine-growing hamlets with views that encompass the entire Alpine chain from Monviso to Monte Rosa. La Morra, perched atop a hill at 513 meters, offers one of the most famous viewpoints in all of Piedmont from its Piazza Castello. Along the way, you pass historic cellars, frescoed country chapels, and characteristic ciabòt, the small stone buildings used by winemakers as tool sheds. The cumulative elevation gain requires good physical fitness, and it is recommended to split the hike over two days, taking advantage of the hospitality found throughout the hamlets.
