Description
The Hemp Trail in Prazzo traces the history of hemp cultivation, a key resource for the Maira Valley's economy for centuries. The twelve-kilometer route ascends through terraced fields where hemp once grew, passing through stone villages that preserve the ancient processing facilities. With over 800 meters of elevation gain, the trail offers a challenging hike, but one rich in ethnographic and naturalistic interest. The larch and beech forests that replaced the historic crops are now home to abundant wildlife. Scenic viewpoints along the trail offer views of the valley and surrounding peaks. Prazzo's Occitan culture is evident in the architecture and place names along the way. Trekking poles and a good supply of water are recommended.
