The Gurne dell'Alcantara Nature Trail

The Gurne dell'Alcantara trail, created by the Alcantara River Park Authority, begins in the center of Francavilla di Sicilia. Nine observation points extend for approximately 1.5 km, passing castle ruins, archaeological excavations, and gurne (small lakes carved by water in the lava rock) surrounded by poplars, downy oaks, willows, and oleanders. Near the end is the Ciappa Mill, where hydroelectric power generation was already being tested in the late 19th century. Along the river, you can spot gray herons, frogs, toads, and grass snakes.
