Elevation Profile
Description
The Mushroom Rock Trail leads to a curious mushroom-shaped rock formation, a sandstone monolith sculpted by wind and rain erosion over millennia, set in the woods above Plodio in the Val Bormida. The route is short and suitable for all, with limited elevation gain on mostly dirt tracks and well-trodden paths. The walk passes through mixed oak and chestnut woodland where squirrels and green woodpeckers are easily spotted. The rock formation, about three metres tall, stands in a small clearing — an example of differential erosion where the softer base has worn away faster than the harder cap, creating the distinctive mushroom shape. On-site panels explain the geological process. Popular with families and suitable even in winter months if ice-free. Consider combining the visit with a stop at the village of Plodio, home to the 15th-century parish church of San Pietro.
