Description
Trail 301B forms a short loop around Barolo, the Langhe village that gave its name to the king of Piedmontese wines. The route begins at the castle of the Marchesi Falletti—home since 2010 to the WiMu interactive museum dedicated to wine culture—and descends through the rows of Nebbiolo vines that cover the marly hills declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. The clay-limestone soil, formed by marine sediments from the Tortonian (about 10 million years ago), crumbles underfoot in the more exposed sections, revealing shell fossils. The village has fewer than 800 inhabitants but is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in the Langhe, with Langhe stone facades and 18th-century doorways. Suitable for everyone and accessible year-round; the October harvest is the liveliest time, with tractors loaded with grapes lining the narrow streets.
